At the heart of the equatorial forest in the Centre, South and East regions, the Beti-Fang peoples made Yaoundé the country's political centre while preserving a rich oral tradition of myths, tales and legends passed down through generations.

Communities
Bantu groups of the Centre region, whose capital Yaoundé is the cultural heart — forest agriculture (cocoa), oral traditions (the Mvet, a sung epic accompanied by a harp-zither).
Communities of the South region, culturally close to the Fang of neighbouring Gabon, known for initiatory rites (Bwiti) and ritual carving expertise.
Forest communities of the East region, including the Baka, known for a close relationship with the equatorial forest, distinctive vocal polyphony and traditional pharmacopoeia knowledge.
